Everything you need to know about Mafia Night and the Mafia game
Mafia Night is a free online tool that helps you moderate in-person Mafia (Werewolf) games. Instead of whispering roles to each player, everyone joins on their smartphone and receives their role privately on their own screen. No app download or account needed.
The moderator (also called 'God') opens Mafia Night and creates a new game. They receive a unique 6-character code, share it with the group, wait for all players to join, configure roles, and then assign them. The whole setup takes under 2 minutes.
Players open mafiawtf.vercel.app on their phone, tap 'Join Game', and enter the 6-character code the moderator shared. They enter their name and wait in the lobby until the moderator starts role assignment.
Mafia Night supports 5 to 15 players plus one moderator (6–16 people total). The classic Mafia game plays best with 7–13 players.
You can configure Mafia members, Villagers, Doctor, Detective, and other special roles. The moderator sets the exact count for each role before assignment begins.
Yes. When you choose random assignment, roles are shuffled and distributed without any bias. You can also choose manual assignment if you want to control who gets which role for custom scenarios.
No. Each player sees only their own role, on their own phone, and can tap the card again to hide it. The moderator sees every role so they can run the game, and all roles are revealed to everyone when the game ends.
The tool itself requires an internet connection to create sessions and assign roles in real-time. However, the actual Mafia game you play is completely offline — players gather in person, and the tool just handles the digital role distribution.
A game stays open while players are using it and closes after 6 hours of inactivity. To play another round with the same group, the moderator can send everyone back to the lobby instead of creating a new game.
Mafia is a social deduction party game. Players are secretly split into two teams: the Mafia (a hidden minority) and the Villagers (the uninformed majority). The game alternates between night phases — where Mafia secretly eliminate a Villager — and day phases — where all players debate and vote to eliminate a suspect. Special roles like Doctor (saves one player per night) and Detective (investigates one player per night) add strategy. The Mafia wins when they equal or outnumber Villagers. Villagers win when all Mafia are eliminated.
They are essentially the same game with different themes. In Mafia, the hidden killers are called the Mafia. In Werewolf, they are called Werewolves. The mechanics are identical, so you can run a Werewolf game with Mafia Night: the Mafia roles play the Werewolves and the Detective plays the Seer.
Yes, completely free. No account registration, no app download, no subscription, and no ads. Just open the website and play.
Yes. Mafia Night is built mobile-first. It is fully optimized for smartphones and tablets, which makes sense since every player uses their own phone during the game.
Absolutely. Mafia (Werewolf) is a popular team-building activity because it builds communication, critical thinking, and social awareness. Mafia Night removes all the setup friction, making it ideal for corporate events, workshops, and large group activities.
